Oh cluna.i am sorry.sweet baggs.how is Baer doing?. *hugs*

@  Rattieroos : (14 February 2018 - 11:42 PM)

Recently lost Dove and Peaches as well. Dove had an ovarian tumor that even the vet was shocked at the size. I let him do a necropsy and he let me stay. Then Peaches had 3 lumps removed but somewhere within the 1st or 2nd day recovery from the surgery, she must have had a stroke or a blood clot :bigeyecry:

@  Rattieroos : (14 February 2018 - 11:38 PM)

So sorry about Baggs Cluna :ratsad:

@  Caryn : (12 February 2018 - 07:43 AM)

I'm so very sorry Cluna :ratsad:

@  Cluna : (09 February 2018 - 12:09 PM)

Thanks Lolly. It would probably be worse for me, but better for her as she loved us so much. She always wanted out of the cage and to be with us. When I found her, she even looked like she was trying to get out the cage. I can only hope that her best friend Bear was there for her at least. Man, we miss her so much. :ratsad:

@  lollyh : (05 February 2018 - 07:43 PM)

Oh cluna.i am so so sorry to hear about baggs. :ratsad: she went the best way.its not easy when they pass in your hands but maybe I've just had to many goodbyes like that.i hope your heartache eases soon.she will always be in your heart. *hugs* .we are all hear from you.

@  Cluna : (05 February 2018 - 12:58 PM)

Hi guys. I haven't been around in a while, and I don't know if you remember me or my ratties, Baggs and Bear. Sadly Baggs (nearly 3) passed on Friday. She was incredibly thin and her breathing was so heavy. Unfortunately, I found her in her cage in the morning and didn't have her die in my hands like I'd wished. She was my heart rat and I am still absolutely devastated. :bigeyecry:

@  Caryn : (19 January 2018 - 06:37 PM)

Thanks. Yeah, she was nearing 2,5yrs and had been on heart meds for CHF for close to 8mths. I got way more time with her than I expected to be honest, but it's never enough time :ratsad:

@ Caryn.. Im so so sorry about Buttons!!!!! Only saw your post now when I checked to see if the forums worked.

Hello all!

I am really befuzzled because my rats are refusing to eat the food I am giving them. Last night I gave them cooked butternut, cooked cauliflower, pasta and a mielie.

They devoured the mielie but then slowly ate the rest. I am going to check if they ate at least half tonight but I am not very hopeful about that.

Why would this be? What can I do to spruce up their food? Could it be that they are *bored* or just fussy? Could it be this is a sign of being too cold? (I changed the arrangement in the cage and I am not sure if they are too cold or not)

Any help is appreciated!

Aw, sorry to hear your ratties aren't eating!

I've noticed with my own boys that if I give the same veggies too regularly, they go off them and start to refuse them. Even Bolliemuis does that! Then I have to wait a good long while before I attempt to feed those veggies again. This happens with most veggies... although mielies seem to always be a hit, no matter what.

so it miiight be that they're just bored with the food... It can also be a sign of illness but you did have them at the vet recently so I dunno.

Are they eating their dry food?

Yes, it seems so. So what do you advise I do? Find new veggies for them? XD

lol yeah pretty much that... try other veggies and maybe some brown rice instead of pasta if they seem off that too...

I think I would have eaten that since they *never* get pasta. Mainly rice and couscous.

What are good veggies to try? I literally don't know XD What veggies do you use and rotate so that they do not get tired of it?

hmm... strange about the pasta, my boys kill for pasta. Rice too. Anything carby... they're like me. But I've quit eating carbs at dinner for a while (due to some people calling me fat :P) so the boys have to make do with veggies only.

For pumpkin-stuff, I mainly rotate butternut, gem-squash (they LOVE the pips) and baby marrow.

They also get broccoli and cauliflower when I make it, which is hit or miss. Sometimes they like it, other times not. I have noticed that they prefer the fleshy stem-parts and not the florets so much.

They also get mielie when I make it, which is always a hit.

Other than that, peas, carrots and brussel sprouts. They went off brussel spouts for a while but last time I made them, the boys went crazy for them again. Beware, brussel sprouts make the boys stinky. So give maybe only a day before you know you're going to be cleaning the cage.

My boys don't much care for spinach or anything leafy...

That's all I can really think of for now...

I can't remember what your schedule is like, but they don't have to get veggies every day

Interesting... I will try that then! :)

My boys LOVE leafy things.

I actually do not know since they are also sick of carrot it seems XD I will try to find some veggies that can be cycled

Here is a topic with plenty of ideas for fresh foods to give :)

http://forums.ratano...ties-get-today/

But otherwise it could just be a phase.  I find my girls will go through stages where they eat more or less.  I try give them as big a variety as possible to ensure that they don't get bored with anything in particular.

Hmmm...moon that is a tough one.

for my babies, they are fussy eaters so maybe your babies are just fussy, maybe give them a different veg a night.

My dinner routin at night is 1 veg,1 fruit & an addition.

For veggies-I give my babies baby carrots, peas, corn, broccoli, colliflower, tomatoes, green beans, butter nut,gem squash & the outside skin, pumpkin, lettuce.

For fruit- apples, grapes, if we buy a fruit salad then they get pineapple, kiwi, mango & paw paw.

For additions to veg or fruit- rice, pasta, spaghetti, dumplings or bread crusts, soup & provettas.

I don't give my babies cabbage or Brussels sprouts as I read that cabbage give rats gas (farts) & sometimes ratties can't express gas easily thus in turn gives them colic or swollen uncomfortable tummy.

I do break another thing that ratties are not suppose to have but my rats love them & that is bake beans.i only give them 1 each.

Hope that helps moon.

My kids devour anything!! Tonight all they got was a bowl of plain brown rice with barley cooled in. Frozen peas and corn are always a hit.. Mine love peeled cucumber and baby tomatoes, apples too if you want to steer away from the cooked veg for a while. Very strange for any rat to not want cooked pasta so that is weird... Normally that's like an all round favorite. Cooked broccoli as well. Butternut as well for that matter... Very strange, just goes to show again that they all have different tastes and favorites.

Give what they do eat or alternate with yogurt and other things if you can.

We're lucky, our boys are not too fussy with fruit and veg (they get very little added carbs like pasta or rice). Perhaps join this FB group, some nice meal ideas shared https://www.facebook...309199/?fref=nf

How much are you feeder per rat? They will go for the tastier stuff and then be too full to eat the rest.

I actually wished my boys wouldn't eat so much.  They going to start rolling to greet me soon.  They eat absolutely everything in one go and give me the starving look afterwards.  It's rather disturbing.

lol CindyR I can relate. The way my boys carry on sometimes, if a stranger had to walk in they would think I starve them. Although looking at Bolliemuis, it is evident that I don't.

I did a quick weigh in of my biggest and smallest boy.  I know that Domino eats a lot, and found he is a whopping 705g.  I know his dad was big, but this is a bit much and it is worrying.  I've tried putting the boys on diet, but it's really not helping.  My newest baby is only 227g.  So small in comparison to the giant.

Cindy that's how I felt when I weighed Treble and Bass... I've tried to cut down and put them on diet so to speak but it's so difficult when they act as if they're starved... I find that when I cut down on the hooman food, when I do give Bass is starting to fight the others so he can hog the bowl and he never did that before. Vet says they're healthy and they'll be 2 soon so maybe I mustn't stress too much. They really don't seem to be battling or lumbering when free roaming. They came to me already big so it's tricky.. Love them to bits though, Treble is a real Mommy's boy and they both loooove ratty massages and they'll just lie there with closed eyes for up to twenty minutes. Also real lap rats
