So I know it is usually not advisable to add foods to an already balanced mix, But personally I find the RR lacking in some respects.
I find that my boys will devour all the biscuts and leave the whole grains unless I am really mean and leave their food bowel untouched until they eat everything.
To counter this problem I ended up adding a 'soup' mix of dry grains to their food and they seam to enjoy these grains more. The grains in the mix are: Split Peas, Split lentils, Barely, wheat and I think oats.
I also add wholegrain Pasta and a tub of pumpkin seeds as well as a cup of hills dog food and lab blocks. I do this for 2 reasons.
1. To add variety
2. To make food stretch further because I do feed dry food ad lib and it gets expensive buying a huge amount of RR every month.
My mix works out more or less like this: 12l Tub of food:
50 % lab blocks
50 % RR
1 small bag of soup mix
1 bag of wholegrain pasta (usually broken spaghetti, the boys enjoy holding onto it)
1 small tub of pumpkin seeds
1 small cup of hills dog food
1 cup of rolled oats
Essentially they get very little of the extras because I make up the bulk of the mix to be lab blocks and RR.
They also get fresh veg every day and a bit of whatever Carly and I have (Usually more of Carly's food since I am vegetarian and my food isn't too different from what they get anyway)
So they will sometimes get bits of chicken or grilled fish and if we haven't given them meat in a while, I will boil an egg or 2, crack it slightly and let them have at it. I try and do this in the morning if I am going to be out all day so that they have something to keep them busy. I also stuff a hollow ball with treats like broken dog biscuits etc just to make being alone more fun.
Besides from mixing with the RN mix, does anyone else add items to RR?
