She says she has had the captcha disabled, so the problem should be solved now. Hopefully people are able to join up without hassle if they try again.

There are people wanting to join the forum who says they received a message asking for a security code?

@  Caryn : (07 July 2018 - 05:49 PM)

Two of my girls over the years have had strokes. Both were still alive when I found them but suffering side effects ie: paralysis, loss of cognitive function. Sadly there is not much that can be done if they are very far gone, smaller strokes can be treated and rats can recover. Seizures are horrible. Mavdb had a couple of boys with issues, you may be able to find posts here on the forum.

Thank you caryn.im so heartsore.i went out for dinner last night & he was fine, came back home 1 hour later & found him at the bottom of the cage like he was didnt know where he was . :puppy_dog_eyes: .do you have any knowledge on seizures or strokes?

@  lollyh : (25 June 2018 - 04:33 PM)

Thank you caryn.yes i know you would.:-).i love her so much.i dont care about the cost.really i dont.even though everyone around me says im mad & just put her down. :bigeyecry: .no unfortunately i don't have an edgars account.

@  Caryn : (25 June 2018 - 11:43 AM)

Sorry you're going through that with your girl. You know I'd opt for the surgery, Dr O says he can do it and I trust him completely. I realise cost is an issue though. Do you have an Edgars acct you can pay with or can you sign a debit order with them? That's what I usually do for larger surgery costs.

@  lollyh : (25 June 2018 - 09:34 AM)

i have such a hard decision to make. :bigeyerat:

So I know it is usually not advisable to add foods to an already balanced mix, But personally I find the RR lacking in some respects.

I find that my boys will devour all the biscuts and leave the whole grains unless I am really mean and leave their food bowel untouched until they eat everything.

To counter this problem I ended up adding a 'soup' mix of dry grains to their food and they seam to enjoy these grains more. The grains in the mix are: Split Peas, Split lentils, Barely, wheat and I think oats.

I also add wholegrain Pasta and a tub of pumpkin seeds as well as a cup of hills dog food and lab blocks. I do this for 2 reasons.

1. To add variety

2. To make food stretch further because I do feed dry food ad lib and it gets expensive buying a huge amount of RR every month.

My mix works out more or less like this: 12l Tub of food:

50 % lab blocks

50 % RR

1 small bag of soup mix

1 bag of wholegrain pasta (usually broken spaghetti, the boys enjoy holding onto it)

1 small tub of pumpkin seeds

1 small cup of hills dog food

1 cup of rolled oats

Essentially they get very little of the extras because I make up the bulk of the mix to be lab blocks and RR.

They also get fresh veg every day and a bit of whatever Carly and I have (Usually more of Carly's food since I am vegetarian and my food isn't too different from what they get anyway)

So they will sometimes get bits of chicken or grilled fish and if we haven't given them meat in a while, I will boil an egg or 2, crack it slightly and let them have at it. I try and do this in the morning if I am going to be out all day so that they have something to keep them busy. I also stuff a hollow ball with treats like broken dog biscuits etc just to make being alone more fun.

Besides from mixing with the RN mix, does anyone else add items to RR?

I have a combination of the RR and RN mix plus I add:

Pumpkin seed

Sunflower seads

Cranberries (make sure it's not the ones soaked dried in juice. Way to much sugar.  Rather take the natural dried ones).

Crushed cashews and pecans (just a little)

Spelt flakes

Dried blue berries

I've tried goji berries and they hate it as much as I do.

Also try a bit of the coloured pasta.  The red and green ones.

I don't do the RN or the RR mix. I make my own mixes for variety sake.

I know the RN mix is balanced and that is really awesome and I looked at it again last night but I am not keen on it as there is so little to it and most items in there are acid forming.

So I do nut mixes and seed mixes which they get every now and then. I base the nuts and seeds I give them based on if they are alkaline.

I believe in a diet that is 75% alkaline and the rest acid

Organic Sunflower seeds.

Pecan nuts (Acid)

Almonds (Alkaline)

Brazil Nuts (Alkaline)

Pine nuts (Alkaline)

pumpkin seeds (Alkaline)

Linseed (Alklaine)

dried Cranberries (Acid)

Coconut flakes

My rats get fresh veg in the evening sometimes with some fruit. Mornings is whatever I eat or I make the coconut porridge for them or Maltabella which is a safer form of wheat as it's less processed and not so many bad side effects on a huge scale.

So I guess the above can be safely added but it will throw the RN balance out I guess.

We feed Reggie Rat but add some brown puffed rice, gogi berries, rolled whole oats and occasionally pumpkin or sunflower seeds, bran flakes, corn wafers (like rice cakes) etc.

We then also feed fresh veg and fruit every day.

I worry that many of the grains and nuts have too much protein and are very fattening so don't give much.

I bought a big bag of RR in December & am battling to get my boys to finish it, they MUCH prefer the RN mix (I mix it without dog cubes though & I do make sure I use the correct ingredients - I can never seem to find the brown & white puffed rice (the Thea's one from Dischem) so I get the wholewheat one from Dischem & everything else is as recommended). I give a handful of Lab blocks a day but throw away probably half of it because I scatter it around the cage & if I see it wet then it's got wee on it so I chuck it out. I sometimes buy that Popcorn stuff as a treat & add it now & then to their food bowl. I'm waiting for the new RN mix prepacks to come available, then will be buying that.

They eat fresh food every night & cereal in the morning.

So I don't feed RR as a base food, they eat all the big pieces & leave the little seeds, so I end up throwing a lot of it away. I haven't got the heart to leave it as their only food bowl. I have a food bowl in each level, the bottom one has had RR in it for days now & they would much rather eat the top level bowl with RN mix.

I also got the RR, but was hoping to get some lab blocks too. I do give them fresh fruits and veggies too.  I'm still new in the game can anyone perhaps tell me where to get lab blocks?! I live in PE and can't ream to find them anywhere. My two also seem to only pick out the bits they like out of the RR mix.

You can order the lab blocks from Pet Mania, I think they post their orders? It's a 2kg bag if I'm not mistaken, so a fair size to order (for about R25 or so).

Thanks for the tip. I'm hoping to go to Cape Town at the end of the month, perhaps I can just stock up then. I'm thinking I can maybe freeze some or vacuum pack them so they say nice and fresh.

My boys are not fond of Reggie Rat at all and I find the mix needs some tweaking too. I feed mine Rat Nature or else Crispy Muesli for Hamsters & Co. which is by the same company as RN

My Ratties are being picky about some of the parts of RR, is there any way to stop them from being fussy?

I do give them a variety of fresh food every day as well so they do get different flavours.

You force them to finish what is in the bowl before you refill. Adult rats can/should have lean periods anyway.

Okay so I am not being cruel if I force them to eat everything left before giving them new stuff? Even if it seems like they don't eat for a day?
